A San Francisco attorney since 1977, Harris' legal practice includes:

- Environmental and hazardous waste clean-up
- Real estate development
- Business and personal injury litigation.
He is a graduate of Stanford University and the Boalt Hall School of Law of the University of California at Berkeley, and began his legal career as an associate with Hancock, Rothert & Bunshoft. Harris is rated A-V (highest rating) by Martindale-Hubbell.
He is a former captain of the Stanford Golf Team, and several of his clients are golf-related businesses. A tenacious advocate, Harris particularly enjoys difficult cases. In 2000, he led a successful legal and political campaign to save the Stanford Golf Course from housing development.
His prior experience includes news reporting, public affairs consulting, and service as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army in South Vietnam.
